June, July, and August 2023

The summer months! It’s been a busy summer. June started out in Haiti. I have so many puppy pictures and that’s about it. I did snap a few others, thankfully. Niolita’s birthday was the 3rd and we got to celebrate her. The Schrurers should the Nunes and I around Zanglais (the MEBSH side). We got in some nice views, good quality time, and history lessons. It’s always a pleasure to be with those two families. Rameau and I share a love of beautiful flowers. I had to make him stick one in his ear like me.

On June 22nd, I flew back to the states. Nathan, another agape affiliate, and I were thankful to hitch a ride with Agape. They land in Venice which is not too bad of a drive for Mama and Lenny. It’s always good to travel with someone else, someone that gets that instant culture shock. The last week of June I spent catching up with family and some close friends.

July was again busy. I spoke at several churches, was blessed by a fundraiser at my home church, and caught up with more family and friends. How wonderful to have so many loved ones that it is sometimes hard to fit everyone in. Of course, I had to sneak in some time with fur babies as well. Linda and Ducky don’t mind me being back in the states, it means more love and inside time for the both of them.

The Galbraith crew helped Gigi G move and I got to take sweet Casey girl to her new home. A lot of the RMI Gainesville crew got together and we have a great time. I am so thankful for these team members and their families. I so enjoyed my time with them!

Mama and I visited Epcot and Animal Kingdom for a few days. It has been almost ten years since we were there. It was great to spend some time just the two of us. We ate so much and saw so many beautiful people and things.

Y’all know if we are going to be anywhere that there’s even a hope of a Haitian restaurant we are gonna find it. We found a great place with amazing food. It was fun to catch with the employees who were all Haitian.

I spent the first few weeks of August saying “see you next years” and getting in final snuggles. On the 18th of August, I flew back home. It was an interesting trip. Mama and I were all set to leave her house at 2am on the 18th. At about 11pm on the 17th I got an email saying my flight from Jax to Miami was canceled but my flight from Miami to Port was still on. We figured it out and wound up booking a flight from Tallahassee to Miami instead. The American Airlines customer service had claimed flights were closed due to weather and that ALL flights into Miami were being canceled. Knowing this, we went in with caution (and I didn’t sleep, of course). Thankfully, we got to Tallahassee and everything went smoothly. After that, all other flights were normal. I am not sure why I couldn’t fly out of Jacksonville but I know that God provides. Thankful for His provision and protection throughout this journey and all of my life.

It is good to be home! I have missed my people, my place, my dog, everything so much in these last 2 months. Please continue to pray for me and all of Haiti and her people. Things are hard but we know the King of kings.

  1. Hello, Sister! How it is September, I can hardly comprehend, but here it is Labor Day Weekend and I’m sooo grateful for a “breather”!!!  I am savoring a rare relaxing moment, reading emails. Thank you for your update! We had wondered when you were headed back.  I’m glad you made it home safely, as we had watched the hurricane news and prayed for everyone in Haiti. It has been hard watching the news coming from Haiti.  We know that God has HIS purpose and plans and pray constantly for our brothers and sisters there.  Kirk and I have been diligent in studying creole and I’m also studying French in hopes that it will aid in communication if/when God grants us a return trip.  2023 has been quite a year!  Our son, Joel, and his wife, Nekiah, started their family with Judah Paul in March.  He was six weeks early, but is doing very well. What a joy to have our fourth grandchild close by!  We savor the moments we share with them.  Son Brian and his wife, Kelly, started their family with Luke Shepherd, just four weeks ago!  We will travel to Virginia early October to spend four days getting acquainted with him.  Very excited to see them!  We saw Brian and Kelly over Memorial Day weekend and celebrated the marriage of his best friend.  Daniel was born in Columbia and moved to the US when he was six.  It is quite a story of God’s providence and protection.  We love his family and hadn’t seen them in six years, so it was a joyful time. I was so grateful we could be there. Kirk is helping his nephew with millet harvest driving a swather, often working 12+ hour days. This summer, Kirk did physical therapy work on Tuesdays & Thursdays at the hospital. The other days, he has been helping to build a house and other projects.  I think his spontaneous personality has enjoyed the variety! We are both still teaching the 4-6th grade Sunday School class.  Praying for our church to be obedient to Christ, faithful to being in His Word, and living out His call in our daily lives.  Soli Deo Gloria! Work is always busy for me, but at the end of April, a co-worker left and it was delegated to me to pick up her work.  Very little of my regular deputy to-do list was accomplished the last three months due to my added duties creating a lot of stress.  I am so very grateful for the Lord answering my pleas for a new co-worker.  He always hears our prayers!  Our new office-mate is part time, but that is better than none.  Not only is she a quick learner, she is very efficient and effective! Praise the Lord! Has lessened the stressed already. There is a couple that moved here from Colorado a few years back that we have become friends with.  Wayne is a Messianic Jew that is a Bible teacher.  He and his wife, Patti, have amazing stories and adventures – what a wonderful God we serve!  Patti is interested in coming with us to Haiti, if God allows…. My “happy place” to unwind is the garden.  God eliminated the drought here this year!  We had an abundance of glorious rain through the spring into summer and even a couple good showers yet this fall!  Our pastures and hillsides are still green, which is seldom seen.  What a joy.  The garden has produced well.  We have been enjoying green and yellow zucchini, cucumbers, corn and beans.  Mom and I froze corn, canned green beans, and now peaches.  Harvested onions and have them stored for the winter months.  The tomatoes are starting to ripen, so sauce and salsa will be next.  Kirk’s specialty is cantaloupe, which will ripen soon as well as the buttercup squash and carrots (love the fresh flavor and also can some of them).  I need to get going… 🙂 Give a big hug to the Nunemaker’s the next time you see them.  Praying for the wedding and their return trip also.  It is amazing to see how the Lord is working in and through difficult situations for His glory. Much Love and Prayers, Tessa! Deb Evertson
